A flow battery may be used like a fuel cell (where new charged negolyte (a.k.a. reducer or fuel) and charged posolyte (a.k.a. oxidant) are added to the system) or like a rechargeable battery (where an electric power source drives regeneration of the reducer and oxidant).
Flow batteries can be rapidly "recharged" by replacing discharged electrolyte liquid (analogous to refueling internal combustion engines) while recovering the spent material for recharging. They can also be recharged in situ.
One such membraneless flow battery announced in August 2013 produced a maximum power density of 0.795 W/cm 2, three times more than other membraneless systems—and an order of magnitude higher than lithium-ion batteries. In 2018, a macroscale membraneless RFB capable of recharging and recirculation of the electrolyte streams was demonstrated.

The mobility and flexibility of the system enables novel applications and deployments where BESS previously were unused due to the non-flexible solutions. The system is modular, meaning that the energy storage capacity can be quickly adapted depending on the application case, in contrast to larger and bulkier solutions.
There are prevailing physical combinations of BESS integration in the power system. For example, using BESS together with renewable energy resources creates opportunities for synergy, including PV, wind power, hydropower, and with other components such as fuel cells, flywheels, diesel generators, EVs, smart buildings, etc.
The system is built of two main blocks. The PCS building block, responsible for the main control of the mobile BESS. The nominal power rating of the PCS block is 225 kVA, with a maximum peak power in the peak shaving mode of 275 kW . The second block is the modular battery pack.
The Juba Solar Power Station is a proposed 20 MW (27,000 hp) solar power plant in South Sudan. The solar farm is under development by a consortium comprising Elsewedy Electric Company of Egypt, Asunim Solar from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and I-kWh Company, an energy consultancy firm also based in the UAE.

At that time the demand for electricity in the county was estimated at over 300 MW and growing. The solar farm will have an attached battery energy storage system rated at 35MWh. The off-taker is the South Sudanese Ministry of Electricity, Dams, Irrigation and Water Resources, represented by South Sudan Electricity Corporation, the national electric utility parastatal company.
This power station is an attempt to (a) diversify the country's generation mix (b) increase the country's generation capacity and (c) increase the number of South Sudan's homes, businesses and industries connected to the national grid. The power station is reported to cost an estimated US$45 million to construct.
