Kilowatt per rack (kW/rack) is the power assigned to a server rack in a data center. It is measured in kilowatts (kW) and represents the total power needed for all IT equipment in that rack. According to AFCOM’s 2024 State of the Data Center Report, average rack density now sits around 12 kW. That’s 2x the 6.1 kW per rack they initially reported in 2016. Despite doubling average density in just eight years, 12 kW still isn’t enough. Data center operators are being asked to support 30 kW+ per rack.
