However, in Vietnam, there is a widely held industry perception that Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are not economically feasible at this moment, while the country's first pumped storage hydropower (PSH) project Bac Ai with a capacity of 1,200 MW will not be commissioned until 20289.
Before 2019, Vietnam's power sources were mostly traditional plants, such as coal-fired, gas-fired, and hydropower plants. From 2019 onwards, the government enacted the renewable energy development mechanisms, thus, solar and wind power sources have developed significantly.
Vietnam's electricity consumption in recent years has regularly grown at a high rate to meet the energy demand for socio-economic development. The growth of power consumption in Vietnam from 2011 to 2022 is summarized in Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2.
Solar power capacity targets have been raised to between 46,459 MW and 73,416 MW. BESS capacity will support this growing share of solar and wind power in Vietnam’s energy mix, helping to stabilize the grid and manage peak demand.
